How nature builds a crystal

From hot fluids and cooling rocks to changing pressure.

Minerals can arise through different geological processes, and a single species can occur in more than one setting. A chemical formula alone does not identify the temperature, pressure or geological history of a particular specimen.

Beryl illustrates this variety: it is known from granitic rocks and pegmatites, but also from hydrothermal and metamorphic environments. Corundum is associated with aluminium-rich, silica-poor conditions and can occur in both igneous and metamorphic rocks.

The place where a gem is found may differ from the place where it crystallized. Weathering and erosion can remove resistant crystals from their original host rock and concentrate them in sediments. A discovery locality therefore does not, by itself, describe the crystal’s complete formation story.
