The long journey of gold
The origin of an atom is different from the origin of an ore deposit.
Gold’s story begins before a nugget forms. Creating a heavy atomic nucleus requires nuclear processes; concentrating those atoms into a deposit on Earth requires geological processes. These are different stages of the story.
Astronomers investigate extreme environments, including neutron-star mergers, as sites of heavy-element production. NASA has also reported evidence that giant magnetar flares may contribute to the production of heavy elements. The relative contributions remain an active research question.
Gold was used long before modern chemistry. Ancient use, scientific identification and modern mining history should not be collapsed into one precise discovery date. The element record therefore retains an ancient-history label rather than inventing a single discoverer.
